One-Minute Sculptures, as the name suggests, is a series that has been created in various cities and institutions for over thirty years. The author prepares the objects and instructions for their use, and then the role is transferred to the viewer, who becomes an active participant in the work, realizing the artist’s concept as he “sees it” and as he can. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but always properly. He has a minute to do so.
As a result, strange human forms arise, breaking stereotypes of social behavior and making us, the viewers of these performances, perplexed. They arouse laughter with their undoubted sense of humor. Although the artist himself does not see anything funny in them, and he treats his work very seriously.
Wurm’s concept of sculpture is rooted in the idea of growth and transformation. “I am very interested in changing the volume of an object – what if I add or subtract volumes … what new meanings will emerge? – this is the essence of my sculptural work, ”he says. Perhaps that is why his sculptures are so interesting and surprising. The game takes place on the simplest of levels. “Can the notion of desperation or ridicule be translated into sculpture? How can this be achieved? “Asks Wurm.
For the viewer, participation in Wurm’s performances is both attractive and embarrassing. A desire is awakened to give oneself a new shape, a new meaning by putting a bucket on his head, and at the same time the banality of this gesture is disturbing.
Erwin Wurm was born in 1954. He works and lives in Vienna.
