What is art? Part 3: Originality

Artists strive for originality, and the art object must be original.

Art strives for originality. It is an attempt to create something new, creative and revealing. Good art is like fingerprints – it indicates the author easily and unmistakably.

Episode 3. Originality and authorship.

This Rothko and this Pollock are not art, because they are fakes. Besides, the fascinating story of the New York Knoedler gallery, which went bankrupt after the discovery of these counterfeits introduced through it, is related to these counterfeits. Below is a photo of Ann Freedman who was responsible for selling these fakes.

Ann Freedman, CEO of Knoedler & Co.

Each of us has different fingerprints and each of us has the potential to create unique, original art, but we must learn to reveal ourselves. He has to find out who he really is, understand what it really consists of, what really interests him, what he upsets, what he despairs, what he loves. It takes work and dedication to understand. It requires years of reflection and trial. So yes, if you pick up a brush today and paint a picture with the intention of creating art, it will be art. But it will be amateur art.

We value the art of those people who have had the courage to define themselves as artists and make their lives a testimony of this decision. Regardless of the cost. No money, no food… whatever. Rejection, mockery, madness – whatever. I am an artist. I am an artist and I create art.
