Dominika Donde, Lightness

Delicate, intricate and … impossible to make. Yet it does exist.

The sculpture entitled Lightness or Kasia from 2018 was created in cooperation with Artem Dmytrenko.

The sculpture attracts attention with its light and original form, which is very difficult to make in porcelain due to the position of the hands and the center of gravity on one bent knee. And this is the key to Kasia’s success. Before making the sculpture, Donde consulted her idea with French masters.
She was told that burning a porcelain sculpture constructed in this way would not be possible due to the center of gravity transferred to one of the dancer’s legs, that porcelain would not withstand it. After months of trying and trying, the artist managed to achieve the desired effect. The artist must be very careful when handling the figurine – as she recalls, one time, when she sneezed, both of her hands fell off …

Dominika Donde is the only Pole to have completed a prestigious pottery course at the National Museum of Ceramics in Paris. She started sculpting when she was forty, previously working in aesthetic medicine. Perhaps this is where she gets her unusual sense of female beauty.
